About The Business

Idea

How did Jorn van Dijk get the idea for Framer?

Jorn came up with the idea of Framer after working with his co-founder at a company called Sofa, which they founded in 2006. Initially, they focused on building Mac apps but had to rely on agency work for major clients to fund their projects.

After gaining valuable experience, including working on the first native Facebook mobile app for iPhone, Jorn and his co-founder decided to leverage their combined expertise from Sofa and Silicon Valley to create a new startup. This led to the founding of Framer, aimed at building a lasting company for the next two decades.

Build

How did Jorn van Dijk build the initial version of Framer?

After leaving his role as one of the early product designers at Facebook, Jorn co-founded Framer in 2014, which was then a prototyping tool. Then, it was a JavaScript library, relying heavily on code to produce prototypes.

With numerous calculated iterations, Framer became an all-in-one prototyping and website design tool over time. With the launch of Framer X in 2018, the team introduced the ability to use and build your react components in Framer.

Then, in 2022, Framer went the distance. It launched the new Framer (FKA Framer Sites), a package of features that offered anyone the opportunity to create and launch full-blown, no-code websites (with rich features like breakpoints and a CMS) from a design canvas in Framer.
