How Adam Charvat Built Meet for Slack & Sold It For an Upper 5-Figure Price
Meet for Slack enables users to create Google Calendar events that invite all channel members and provide quick access to a meeting room. Users can automatically send event invitations to the email addresses of channel members and also keep a record of all instant meetings in Google Calendar.
Who is Adam Charvat?
Adam Charvat is the founder of Meet for Slack, an app that allows users to start Google Meet meetings instantly from their Slack channel without having to switch applications.
Adam is an indie maker and a software engineer with a passion for building apps on the side while running his Shopify agency. He holds an Information Technology degree from the University of the West of England.
What problem does Meet for Slack solve?
Slack channel members want convenience in starting meetings with channel members.
How did Adam come up with the idea for Meet for Slack?
In 2021, Adam used Slack daily to interact with his teammates and coworkers.
He found it frustrating that Slack did not have an integrated system for calls and meetings. Whenever Adam needed to join a call, he had to obtain a link from Google Meet or Zoom and then paste it into Slack.
Adam thought this was a big hassle and that there should be a better way to jump into meetings.
So, he took the matter into his own hands and created an app called Meet for Slack.
How did Adam build the initial version of Meet for Slack?
Adam created an application that could automatically start a Google Meet session when a user typed "/meet" in a private Slack channel.
His team loved the tool, and it soon became a regular part of their workflow. The positive reception prompted Adam to make the tool available to other Slack users. He worked on the app in the evenings for approximately three months, transforming his idea into a fully launched product.
After a few months of organic growth and thousands of users, Adam implemented a paywall with three pricing tiers based on team size. Existing free plan users continued to receive free access for several months, but Adam sent an upsell message with every meeting created.
The Exit Deal
In early 2023, Adam decided to sell his business and start a new project. He listed it on Acquire.com, and after five serious buyer conversations, one buyer named Justin stood out, but his initial offer was less than Adam’s asking price.
Adam told him what price I was looking for, and Justin sent a new proposal matching it. He signed the deal and successfully sold the business for an upper five-figure amount.
How did Adam launch Meet for Slack and get initial traction?
Adam attempted Product Hunt to promote his new app but saw minimal results, despite offering it for free. He managed to list the app in the Slack directory and received thousands of installations from the Slack directory. Achieving more installations made Adam realize that he was truly onto something.
What was the growth strategy for Meet for Slack and how did they scale?
Most of his customers came in through his listing on the Slack app directory and posting on indie hackers.
Adam also launched on ProductHunt, although it failed to generate much traffic. The app has grown organically with many users learning about it through word of mouth.
What's the pricing strategy for Meet for Slack?
